A Made Cut Streak That May Never Be Matched Again
For the first time in nearly four seasons, 203 weeks, and over 1,400 days, Scottie Scheffler will not play the weekend of a golf tournament. After 78 consecutive cuts made, he finally did not hit the mark at this week’s Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. The last time he went home early was at the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship.
1,400 days is a long time, so let’s see what has happened since the last time Scottie failed to make the cut. He won three major championships – the 2024 Masters, the 2025 PGA Championship, and the 2025 Open Championship – and 17 events in total, including two PLAYERS Championships and an Olympic Gold Medal. He has spent 173 weeks as the world’s best golfer, including 159 consecutive weeks in the top spot. On a personal note, he also had two children while remaining World No. 1.
For me, I went through the final three years and graduated from college. Got my first full-time job, moved to a new(ish) city, and finished my first year of grad school. Suffice it to say, four years is a lifetime.
But what Scottie’s streak also does is put into perspective what Tiger Woods did between 1997 and 2005. For eight years and 142 consecutive tournaments, Tiger Woods played the weekend. Think about that. In the time between missing cuts, Tiger could have gone to high school and college. Instead, he won eight of his 15 major championships, 37 PGA TOUR events, and spent 330 weeks at World No. 1, including a stretch of 263 consecutive weeks.
What Scottie has done over the last nearly four years may never be replicated (except by him), given how many great players there are on TOUR right now. While we have been focused on how close he has come to winning throughout this season, it is now time to take a step back and admire what he just did.
78 straight cuts made, bravo Scottie. Enjoy your well-deserved and rare weekend off.
